Wheel- and Matchlock Musket

S.V.L.1620/1630

Skokloster Castle

Skokloster Castle
Skoklosters, Sweden

This is but a poor remnant of an expensive weapon. The barrel is missing and the lid for the small compartment in the butt of the stock. The compartment usually contained implements for maintenance of the weapon, like a screw and wiper or a small bullet mould. The lock, however, shows that it was a Gentleman’s weapon. The expensive but unreliable wheellock is supported by a sturdier matchlock. This combination would never have been used for infantry soldiers.
