This is one of several wheelchairs that FDR used. He found the wheelchairs of the time to be too large and cumbersome. Rather than use a convention wheelchair he designed this smaller, discreet and more efficient wheelchair. He had workers cut of the legs off a simple, wooden kitchen chair and mount it to a custom-designed chassis. The design allowed for greater mobility and enabled FDR to move down narrow hallways and around tight corners with ease.
