Boris Chatz (1867–1932) was born in the Belarusian town of Varniai, within the former Russian Empire. His development as a sculptor followed a long and complex path through Vilnius and Warsaw. Since 1890 he studied in Paris under the famous sculptor Mark Antokolsky. Chatz came to Bulgaria in 1895 and founded his own private drawing school. In 1896, along with Ivan Mrkvička and Anton Mitov, Boris Chatz became a founder of the State Drawing School and was appointed as its first professor in sculpture. He created official portraits, realistic compositions and decorative sculptures, using motifs from Bulgarian medieval art. He was the sculptor who first raised the issue of national identity in Bulgarian art.
