Most historians believe that whistles originated in ancient China when sentries blew into the tops of acorns to alert others that an approaching enemy had been spotted. Many other cultures, ancient and modern, have used whistles for work and entertainment. Early whistles were made of bone and clay; later, metals and plastics made ideal whistles.
