15th Century~Early 16th century

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

The Chinese character for sky (天) is engraved on the bottom of this sheer white porcelain bowl. It was produced at the Bunwon kiln sometime between the 15th and the early 16th century. Other porcelain bowls, bearing engraved Chinese characters for earth (地), black (玄), or yellow gold (黃), have also been handed down. These characters are assumed to refer to the storehouses at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Palace of Resplendent Happiness.
