  • Artist Information: Seo was a politician during the closing years of the Joseon Dynasty. Born to a family of a high-ranking government official, he was exposed to Japanese, American, and European culture at an early age and firmly believed in the need to modernize the nation. He participated in the failed Coup d'Etat of 1884 that was attempted to overthrow the conservative government and build a modern government, and he escaped to Japan. He later returned home and worked for the pro-Japanese government led by Kim Hong-jip. He was appointed as Minister Plenipotentiary to the U.S., but was soon dismissed by the pro-Russian Korean government. He died young from disease in the U.S.
