Before the Wright Brothers successfully completed the first powered controlled sustained flight of an aircraft in 1903, the brothers tested the concept utilizing small models in an artificial wind tunnel. This allowed them to understand how to develop the wings and create the necessary lift for successful flight. Aircraft engineers today practice many of the same principles utilized by the Wright Brothers today.
