Winnowing Tray

Morphe
Balamand, Lebanon

A round tray with a tight weave and concave shape. A fabric ribbon is tied to its edge. It was used for the winnowing of the wheat, which is it is weaved tightly to retain the grains and prevent them from passing through the mesh. When the woman throws the contents of her tray in the air, the grains assemble in the center and are separated from the bran. Metal trays were sometimes used instead but the this one is more practical: lighter, its shape, its flexibility and its diameter facilitate the gesture and the work of the woman.
