Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

This portrait, which was probably produced with the assistance of Christoph Amberger, is a high-quality example of the depiction of commoners during the German Renaissance. Its surviving sliding cover bears the sitter’s coat of arms. Ronner was the Fugger representative first in Bolzano and later in Schwaz (Tirol). The name of the city—“Swats”—is found on the inscription on the letter in his left hand.
