Wood and gourd ceremonial goblet with a fire-engraved mythological scene ML400029

This is a ceremonial cup made of wood and a gourd. Its sculptural handle has been carved in the shape of a feline. The feline has been inlayed with mother-of-pearl and lapis lazuli beads and the cat's claws are natural. The gourd that forms the container has been fire-engraved with a mythological scene. In Peru, fire engraved gourds or “mates” constitute an ancestral art that continues to this day. (UH)

Esta es una copa ceremonial, cuyo mango escultórico ha sido tallado en madera en forma de felino. Tiene incrustaciones de nácar, lapislázuli, y algunas de las garras del felino son naturales. El mate forma el recipiente, y sobre él ha sido pirograbada una escena mitológica. En el Perú, la confección de mates pirograbados es un arte milenario que continúa hasta nuestros días. (UH)
