Within a few years, a dense telegraph network was being created in Germany that not only connected most cities but also extended across the entire European continent. The Prussian central telegraph office (Haupttelegrafenamt, HTA), located in Berlin on Französische Straße, was an important hub of activity. The wires of 26 lines converged here.
