These wooden traps are for goby fish, who mistake the box openings for rock crevices, which is where they prefer to spawn. During the 1940s-50s, ceramic traps were difficult to come by, so these clever imitations were created out of wood.
Selected as a National Significant Tangible Folk Culture Asset.
Found in Tamano City,Okayama Prefecture.
