Wooden Mortar

This is a traditional mortar used in Jeju Island as the equivalent to a jeolgu mortar on the mainland. It is made with a hollowed inside to prevent pounded grains from spilling out, and the center of the mortar is hollowed again to insert a basalt pestle into it. Compared to the mortar used on the mainland, which is large enough for two persons to pound grains while standing face to face and holding the pestle together, the Jeju mortar is much larger than the mainland version to the extent that it is generally used by three persons, and six at most. Mortars used by three persons are called setkol banga, and those used by six persons yeoseotkol banga.
