By the early 60’s a strong feeling of nationhood was palpable. In Madras (now Chennai), K.C.S Paniker formed the Cholamandalam artist community. Artists at this time were taking a fresh view at traditional sources of imagery.

Paniker with his use of traditional symbols created a new dimension for the painted surface. The ascetic monochromatic painting induces the bewitching power of sacred texts. The text comes together with the visual motifs or symbols and engages in an intimate dialogue with the written word and throbs with the unfathomable mystery of transformation.
