The cathedral-city of Canterbury was targeted during the 'Baedeker' raids of spring 1942. On 1 June, seventy-seven bombers droped tons of high explosives and thousands of incendiaries on the city. Forty-three people were killed and hundreds of buildings damaged or destroyed.
