Grimeton Radio Station, Varberg2004

UNESCO World Heritage

UNESCO World Heritage

Erected in 1924, the Radio Station in Grimeton - Sweden, was part of an important global network of stations that served for several years as a unique and significant telecommunication center, reflecting technological achievements using wireless telegraph communication. The electro mechanic transmitting system was developed in the United States by the genius engineer Ernst Alexanderson. For the first time ever, telegrams from Sweden could be sent over to the USA in less than 20 minutes, a revolutionary concept back in the time. Due to the site’s exceptionally well-preserved state and its unique character, the Grimeton Radio Station was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 and is regarded today as an outstanding example of the only remaining radio station of its kind in the world.
