The World War I memorial honors the valor and sacrifice of the more than 2 million Americans who served to make the world safe for democracy. The design strikes a balance between an open Civic space, and a quiet memorial, while addressing its context. The Pershing Memorial will be reconfigured on the west edge of the site with the statue looking across the fields, symbolizing Americas reluctance to enter the far away conflict.
This design is that a cenotaph, an empty tomb, and its floating lawn.
