The 16 prototypes, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, were designated WP/P and the first of these, No. 7200, named “Azad”, is now being maintained at the Rewari Steam shed. The word “Azad” which means “independent” is very apt for the locomotive as the first prototypes were delivered in 1947, the year India became an independent nation.
