My project was inspired by the memorials I consider the most successful in Washington, DC.: The United States Marine Corps memorial by Felix de Weldon, and Maya Lin's Vietnam war Memorial. Elements drawn from each are adapted to the iconography of World War I. The site strategy is simple and direct. The existing park is cleared and leveled, the memorial itself a collection of metal soldiers led by an officer on horseback. They appear to be emerging from a monolithic metal plane, representing both the literal battle of Belleauwood, and the abstraction of soldiers caught within the frenzied fog of war.
