Born in Mandalay, Myanmar, M. P. P. Yei Myint (1953) graduated from State School of Fine Art (Mandalay) in 1970. Yei Myint held his first solo exhibition in 1979 and has participated in exhibitions in Asia and Europe since 1971. In 1999, he was one of the two representatives of Myanmar for the Philips Morris ASEAN Art Award. Yei Myint studied under U Win Pe (1936), one of the leading proponents of the modernist movement in Myanmar while in school. A versatile artist, Yei Myint is not limited by mediums and paints in a wide variety of styles. Traditional and cultural icons of Myanmar are a large part of his artistic language, often subtle commentaries about the social and political situations in and out of Myanmar. Yadanabon is the official name for the capital of the last dynasty of Myanmar, the Konbaung dynasty (1752-1885). In 'Yadanabon Dynasty', Yei Myint painted stairs morphing into hills, and trees growing in rivers. Together with traditional pagodas, deities, imaginary creatures, and dancing Burmese ladies, Yei Myint presents a surreal view of the last dynasty here.
