These startlingly contemporary designs for new sentry boxes highlight a shift in the approach to new work at the Tower from the historicist style of the late 19th century to an unashamedly modern style in the 1960s.

Designs for new sentry boxes were prompted by the desire to relocate several of the existing huts, which were in a poor condition. A trial box was made and installed by the East Gate, but it was ultimately decided that the design did not blend in with the rest of the Tower. The trial was not a total failure, however, as it did highlight the need for windows in the sides of the boxes.
