This Zen painting is one of Lü's best-known works. An abstract composition representing the universe, the earth, and the origin of life, it has in its upper centre a patch of red that looks very much like a flame or a lotus bud. It hovers above the one diaphanous, dry brushstroke and the much denser, layered form below. It is the artist's interpretation of affinity between Man and the Heavens. This painting breaks away from the aesthetics and vocabulary of traditional Chinese ink painting by incorporating Western abstract expressions, and marked the beginning of a new Chinese ink painting movement in Hong Kong.
