Zeus Brontajos; Roman copy after the Hellenistic combination of models from the 5th and the 4th c. BC; Roman school

The statue was purchased in 1785 or 1786 in Rome for the Lancut collection. Only the torso with fragments of legs and arms is original. The remaining parts; including the eagle; were added in modern times. The prototype for the statue was the sculpture of standing Zeus. The posture and body position seem to point at Polykleitos; although the proportions are closer to the ones applied in the 4th century BC. A great similarity to the type common in the 4th century BC is the statue's head; especially when compared to the known representations of Asclepius. It can be thus concluded that the immediate prototype for the showcased copy - dated to the Hadrian period (2nd century AD) - was an Hellenistic imitation combining the 5th and 4th century BC types.
