£1 Inimitable Banknote Design

A machine engraving on steel in black and white with a complicated spiral pattern and the word 'One' written on it. In the 1800s the Bank of England asked printmakers to submit banknote designs which were difficult to imitate, to prevent forgeries. This print was submitted by Richard Williamson as an 'inimitable note.' The text below indicates this design was for the back of the banknote.
