The Most Splendid Color of the Season Are Being Used for Evening Wraps Since the Opera Began.
New York, December 2. – A brilliant feature to the onlooker at the opening of the opera season is the splendor of the wraps.
One had anticipated the gowns; crystals, sequins, ropes of rhinestones and pearls, spreading flowers of cut steel placed on velvet, tulle, chiffon, and enough fur to keep the Russian soldiers warm in the winter campaign.
No one quite sensed, however, the gorgeousness of the modern evening wrap that would be launched at the formal opening of the social season in a rich winter in the greatest city of the continent.
Flame Colored Velvet Leads
It would be easy to arrive at a reasonable computation of the sum of money spent on opera wraps by those who sat in the boxes, but the aggregation of colors was more stimulating to the mind than the cost of these wonderful wraps.
Flame color was in the lead, and velvet overtopped the other fashions. Several kinds of fur were heaped on this flame colored material and there were also barbaric designs, made of jewels and applied to the surface in such way as we shall see later in the costumes designed by Leon Bakst for the Russian ballet.
King's Blue a Favorite?
All of the coats were long, all of them were full, but many of them had the effect of exceedingly slim shoulders, because the sleeves were set so far into the back. The collars were higher than anything that had ever been attempted in this country, and on one coat of king's blue velvet there was a collar of fox that covered the nose.
This brilliant shade of blue was the next favorite to that flame pink that flashes out in gowns as well as wraps.
The sketch shows the outline of the coat. It was made by Jenny and has a long-waisted top part that fastens well on the side. The lower part is quite full at the side and is weighted down by an unusually large band of fur. The sleeves, by the way, are finished with immense cuffs that are now used as muffs in the evening
