This wall chart from 1941 with the euphemistic title “The Jewish migration from the Ostmark“ was created to demonstrate the efficiency of the SS Central Office for Jewish Emigration set up in 1938. The chart describes the bureaucratic obstacle course of those seeking to save their lives – a succession of humiliations and systematic confiscation of property. It refers to the period up to March 31, 1941, by which time the “ethnic cleansing” by expulsion had been extensively completed. The trains with deported Viennese Jews had been heading for Poland since February 15, 1941. The statistics are evidence and a symbol of the system devised and tested in Vienna and exported from there by Eichmann and his staff, a system that was already specialized in mass extermination even before the Wannsee conference of January 20, 1942.
