During the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese hardwood furniture was considered a symbol of status and luxury in European markets, especially in France. They were used as a symbol of exclusive and opulent tastes. It was only those associated with the Imperial courts, noblemen and wealthy families who could afford these items.
