Kyoto karakami

Karakami paper artisans further refined the art and passed it on through the generations. In the early Edo Period, this paper was crafted as writing paper in the much-sought-after Saga-bon style of imprints at Hon’ami Koetsu’s arts village of Takagamine. Later, when karakami came into use as traditional sliding door paper, groups of artisans came together in centers such as Higashi-no-toin Street. It is now clear that the first generation Karakamiya master Karakamiya Chouemon or Karacho, who was of the samurai class, began his work there.
