Removing the porcelain from the kiln, late 18th century

Here when the kiln is opened the saggars inside are of a dull red colour. The kiln is still hot to enter but workmen wrap their heads with damp cloths, and protect their hands with gloves made of ten or more layers of cotton soaked in cold water to take out the fired porcelain.
