Sleeve Fragment with Embroidered Figures and Flowers

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Believed to be part of a sleeve, this piece of fragment was made by sewing together two pieces of double-layer plain qi, a kind of undyed silk twill. The smaller patch, probably serving as the cuff, is in the shape of bells, while the other larger one is decorated with figure and floral motifs embroidered in satin and split stitches. The figure, clad in a large feather-adorned hat, is standing among flowers with two fork-shaped hands upright. The floral motifs, each of which is adorned with a narrow tape with two knot ends, are densely arranged, forming lozenges on the foundation. Folds and creases can still be seen along the seam between the two patches.
