As a modern duplicate Emperor Qianlong’s yellow satin imperial canopy with nine-dragon motifs based on the reference to recordings about canopies for the guard of honor by emperors of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912 AD), this item is composed of three sections, namely, cap, pole, and canopy, which is made of quaint yellow satin embellished with nine-dragon motifs by gold couching embroidery.
There were rules and regulations that must be abided by regarding the guard of honor for emperors’ outing in the Qing dynasty. In the winter of 1748, or the 13th day during Emperor Qianlong’s reign, the emperor ordered court painters to make truthful recordings of the apparatus regarding the guard of honor upon his return from a trip to the southern suburbs of the capital to offer sacrifices to the Heaven. A book named Illustrated Recording of the Guard of Honor Apparatus during the Majesty’s Journey to the Southern Suburbs was thus complied, which documented the grand scenes of the trip, involving 3770 people, over 330 horses, 11 elephants, 5 highly-embellished large carriages, the imperial orchestra with 248 members and 886 pieces of apparatus.
