This square shaped iron sword guard is regarded as a piece created by the 3rd head of the Kamiyoshi family, Rakuju, based on the style of work. It has an openwork design of dried trepangs. The chisel marks around the nakago-ana (opening for inserting a blade tang) is one of the features of his works.
