This building is not only the tallest hall among the existing ones in Geyuan Garden, but also the highest among all the remaining ancient buildings in Yangzhou. It was named “Qingsong”, meaning spreading the good reputation, as the garden owner Huang Zhiyun had a great reputation during the later years of his life. The couplet on the pillars in front of the hall reads “the top priority of this hundred-year-old family is to do good things, and what the family values most is reading books”, expressing the values of benevolence and knowledge of the Huang Family.
This hall was also where the family members watched operas during festivals. It is said that the Huangs once had an opera troupe with members up to 200 to 300, shedding light on the wealth of the family. The door panels are all removable, in case they would obstruct the view of the audience.
