Autumn Landscape

Tottori, Japan

This massive landscape painting depicts a vast scenery of mountains that continue deep into the back of the picture. The nobleman crossing the bridge with his walking stick is probably heading toward the pavilion in the mountains that can be seen in the middle ground. The sense of depth is achieved by arranging the mountains in a zig-zag fashion on the left and right, and painting trails of mist between them. The few bright red leaves that are visible next to the ultramarine blue and patina colors add a decently autumnal air that makes the painting a highly transparent work with a grand attitude.
