The Reality of Movement # 12

Cheng Hsiu-Ju raises the question of whether our true selves have been erased by mundane lifestyles. Here, ordinary items are painted on the walls and floors from a predetermined viewpoint, their contours shifting as viewers walk around them. Some changes make sense. Some don’t. Interaction between the lines and spaces shifts the objects back and forth between truth and falsity, subjectivity and objectivity. The viewer’s body becomes the only standard by which to measure the accuracy of their observation. Every look and glance is unique. As viewers spot the drawings the artist has carefully drawn in place, they also discover their true identity hidden beneath their ordinary lives.
