The collar, cuffs and lap of this robe are embellished with wide hems of tiger fur. And along the inner edge of the tiger there are decorative tapes in yellow, red and blue gold-wefted brocade, with narrow red piping along the outer border. Abstract cloud patterns can be found in the corners of the lap.
This robe is mainly made of Tibetan wool felt, a kind of fabric with a firm textile, a soft feel and a glossy surface handwoven by the Tibetan people. Believed to have a history of over 2000 years, this weave, as important and widely-used as the cotton cloth to the Han people, has been the main material for Tibetan apparel, boots, and hats. The making of Tibetan wool felt involves spinning, dyeing, weaving and refining.
