Dyeing the Thread, Echigo Jōfu

The thread is carefully dyed. In premodern Japan, indigo was the most common dye for ramie textiles as it is difficult to dye bast fibers with other natural dyes because of the delicacy of the thread. Today Echigo jōfu threads might be colored with synthetic dyes or with indigo or other natural dyes.
