Sumida, Japan

The gilt leather brought to Japan was often used for pouch. The reddish gilt leather like that of this pouch was especially popular. Netsuke (miniature carving attached to the end of a cord) shows delicate openwork. The horse-shaped fitting metal is made of iron. The ojime (cord fastener) has the shape of "oni", a kind of Japanese folkloric demon. He is holding on to the cord.
