Tobacco and Salt Museum
Sumida, Japan

A tobacco pouch made of gilt leather. Gilt leather was used to decorate the walls in Europe and it became popular in Japan as gold leather. Since the tobacco pouch of gilt leather was one of the status symbols, netsuke (miniature carving attached to the end of a cord) and ojime (cord fastener) used for this pouch are also splendid. Both ornaments were made by the eminent craftsmen.
