The Vajra mandala is a symbol of the Kalacakravajra or wheel of time in Tibetan Buddhism. It often appears at the main gateway of temples, on the cover of scriptures, or on Thangka paintings. Kalacakravajra is an esoteric Indian belief system that came from South India to Tibet in the 12th centaury. There, it fused with the Tantric practices native to Tibet, eventually becoming an important part of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
