Hubei Provincial Museum

Hubei Provincial Museum
Wuhan, China

This is a set of two pillow tops. Ancient pillows were generally rectangular and these items would have been installed on two ends. They served to fix the pillow in place and also as decoration. These two pillow tops are composed of one outer and one inner square. The inner square is greenish-white jade, with an openwork motif of lychee branches and fruit. The outer squares are made of gilt bronze, now rusted green. Each of the pillow tops is set with 14 gems.
