Greenish-white Openwork "East Rising" Circular Ornaments

Hubei Provincial Museum

Hubei Provincial Museum
Wuhan, China

These circular jade ornaments are of the same shape and size. Both are carved with a motif of two rabbits looking at the moon, but the rabbits face in opposite directions. At the top-center of this motif, five clouds adorn the moon, while at the bottom, a eucalyptus tree heavy with fruit covers one large and one small rabbit who stare at the moon. The Lingzhi mushroom on the chest of the large rabbit is an auspicious symbol. As the moon rises from the east, this motif is called an "East Rising Picture".
