Taiwan least weasel is an endemic species in Taiwan and was first described in 2010 by Dro. Liang-Kong Lin and his Japanese colleagues. The first specimen was collected and identified as Mustela sibirica in 1969 by the researchers of the Institute of Prevented Medicine, National Taiwan University. This specimen was donated to NMNS in 1995 initiating research surveys which led to the discovery of a new subspecies.
