Gombangme, also called gombae, is an agricultural implement used for breaking clods and burying seeds, which anyone could use easily. Gombangmejil, the act of breaking clods, was also referred to as daengichigi (beating clods), daengikkaegi (breaking clods), or gombaejil. This tool was made by connecting a cylindrical log to a long shaft in a T shape. After rice paddies and fields were plowed with a plow, this tool was used to break clods to smooth the soil. It was also used to tend the furrows in the fields and paddies after using a plow to dig furrows for sowing seeds. After seeds were sown, it was also used to cover the seeds with soil and to even out the fields. Some gombangme were made to resemble a rake by piercing holes in a cylindrical log and inserting carved wooden sticks into them, which was called balgombangme in Goheung, South Jeolla Province.
