<treasure no.638> The Joseon Office of Elders, also known as Gisa or Giroso, was established in 1394, the third year of the reign of King Taejo (1392-1398).
Civil officers of the Second Court Rank or higher aged70 years or older, as well as the King when he reached 60 years of age, were admitted to the Office. For the King to become a member, an eocheop, or folded copy of the king’s personal information, including his name, date of birth, and date of admittance into the Office, had to be first enshrined. This particular album documents a banquet for Gisa members, and was painted by Kim Jin-yeo, Jang Tae-heung, Park Dong-jin, Jang Deuk-man, and Heo Suk. page 7.
