Kkeunggae, or leveler, is a farming tool used to level or break the ground before or after seeding, which is also called kkeulgae. It can be made from a variety of materials including wood, pine twigs, and bush clover. It is made by evenly tying up around ten rounded sticks at a length between 20 cm to 30 cm, with branches trimmed off except for those facing downwards. It would be sat on by a person or weighed down with a rock, then pulled by a cow to crush hard clods on the ground that have frozen over winter. In some cases, a bunch of pine twigs or bush clover would be tied together to create a thick and strong enough board to carry a person or a heavy rock, and some were attached with a handle. It was also used to cover up barley seeds with soil after seeding to prevent birds from pecking at the seeds, or to train young calves to plow.
