The inscription on this stone monument details the construction of Namsansinseong Fortress, offering very valuable information about the regionalized governing system, class structure, and lifestyle of 6th century Silla. Namsansinseong Fortress extends for a total length of 3.7km, encompassing a number of valleys, including Haemongnyeong Valley to the north of Mt. Namsan. Accoding to the records from the Samgukyusa(the History of the Three Kingdoms), Namsansinseong Fortress was first built in the 13th year of King Jinpyeong’s reign (591 CE) to defend the south of Gyeongju, and was later expanded in the 19th year of King Munmu’s reign (679 CE). The first monument of Namsansinseong Fortress was discovered in 1934, and since then nine more units have been found, each of which provides details of the construction.
