This is a tool used to prop up a heated iron when ironing. An ironing set consists of an iron, an iron support and a fan. An iron support is a frame to hold a heated iron, and a fan was used to blow air into the fire when the embers dwindled. An iron support was made of stone or the same metal as the matching iron, so as not to be melted by high temperature. The black stone iron support shown here has an outer surface in the shape of a nonagon, the inside of which is trimmed in a circle. It has a hole inside and a narrow waist in the shape of a mortar.
