Section of The Funeral Procession of Empress Myeongseong : Gyeonyeo
The Funeral Procession of Empress Myeongseong features 26 types of gama, a traditional Korean form of sedan chair. In this painting, the gama were engraved into stamps and imprinted, then colored in afterwards. Compared to other official depictions of Joseon-era state funerals, the basic design and size of the gama are similar, and that the overall format remained traditional.
The gyeonyeo was a type of gama that followed the daeyeo, and generally used to pass through narrow doorways when transporting the caskets of kings and queens outside of the royal palace.
