A bamboo blind is woven with bamboo strips using thread, and is also referred to as a bamboo-hanging screen or a hanging screen. It serves as a cover for blocking sunshine and insects by being hung over windows or doors or in front of the main floored room in summer while allowing the breeze to pass through. A bamboo blind is made by weaving thin strips of bamboo using silk thread or twine as warp threads. Using a bamboo blind allowed cool air to enter indoors due to its ventilation effect. The head and bottom bamboo strips were made to be thick, and straps are attached after affixing loops at both ends of the head bamboo strip. A bamboo blind is hung and rolled up on the inside of the room, and a rolled-up blind would be hung on the straps. When the blind is drawn, the outside can be seen from the inside of the room, which cannot be seen easily from the outside due to the shade created by the angle of the sunlight. This creates a cool and cozy ambience in the room. Patterns can be added on a bamboo blind by means of colored bamboo strips. The blinds are decorated mainly with patterns including Chinese characters such as twofold joy (囍), joy (喜), long life (壽) and good luck (福). Also, the edges of the blinds were hemmed using dark blue or green fur or silk. The head and the bottom strips of the rectangular bamboo hanging screen shown here were made of two bamboo stalks. The hexagonal decorative pattern was made using threads woven from bamboo strips, and the Chinese character meaning twofold joy was added in the center of the blind. Five fringes made of threads used for weaving were hung loosely over the head strip.
